And now I have a question.
This summer, my boys and I want to read a book together.
We started "Treasure Island", however about 5 chapters in, my boys decided that it might be a bit too scary.
They asked if we could choose something else.
So, I was wondering...
Have you got any ideas for a good summer read for a Mom and 2 boys?
An adventure, maybe....not too scary...not too long...but long enough.
Any suggestions...at all...please!

I'm reading "Farmer Boy" by Laura Ingalls Wilder to my younger kids this summer (I've read it probably 5 times now but my younger ones don't remember it :o). The ones really listening and enjoying it are 12, 9, 7 and 5. Not sure how old your kids are, but it's such a great read. Blessings!

Of course that one above (Farmer Boy) is also a huge favorite. Don't know why I didn't think of it first.

My boys loved the Chronicals of Narnia. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is a great one to start with, and my favorite. They also offer great openers for spiritual discussions. . .

ReplyDeleteI have 4 boys ages 10-15 who are avid readers, I am sure I have some great suggestions :) but I'm not sure how old your boys are? If they haven't read Harry Potter that was fun to read with my kids. My boys even enjoyed the other Little House on the Prairie books-we started with the first one and read through about 4 I think before it got old. Peter and the Starcatchers is great. Just thought of this--my 10 year old LOVES the "Seekers" series by Erin Hunter. Not too scary, but adventurous. It's about 3 bears that are orphaned and have to make their way together, each is a different species of bear. There is a similar series out by the same author about cats called "Seekers". If your boys are younger the Magic Tree House books are winners! Two young children travel through time on different adventures, they are fairly short, but all 5 of my kids (even the girl) loved these books, they are about 2nd grade reading level I think. That's all off the top of my head, Post how old your boys are and I'll ask my boys for specific suggestions.

I have friends that have read the Harry Potter's series but I am not a fan of that series so that is a big no in my house! I am going to look up some of the books that your readers suggested! Thanks!

ReplyDeleteI really should have mentioned my boys are almost 8 and 11. We have read Magic Treehouse and we have seen several of the Narnia movies.
I am looking forward to checking into these books....of course, I'd love any other suggestions anyone may have!

Okay, 8 and 11. Here's my two suggestions. My first and most favorite are the Five Ancestors series. My son David, 11, started reading them and I skimmed through them, but got hooked. It starts with Tiger and then goes on. They are not long like Fablehaven (my second choice), but they are awesome chapter book. Hmmmm how to describe?????There's mystery, Suspense, Kung Fu, and Drama, but all very age appropriate. I loved them. We have them all, so I would be happy to loan them to you. I would like to get them back after you read them though. They aren't very costly, so maybe you would like to buy them for yourself to keep as well. Your choice. The first in the series starts with Tiger, then Monkey, Snake, Crane, Eagle, Mouse and Dragon. It goes through a series of events from each person's perspective. They are not hard to follow along with and something boys would be really captivated by. If you want to get them from the library, the author's name is Jeff Stone. He's a really nice man. Met him at my kiddos school.
ReplyDeleteI have not read the Fablehaven books myself, but my daughter read them and she said they were awesome and that boys in your age range would like them.

My Lily is 10 and she and her dad are progressing through the Percy Jackson books. She loves it and loves spending time with her dad.

Is the 8 year old reading the book independently also? An absolute favorite adventure book is Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. I don't know a child who didn't like it.
ReplyDeleteNot sure of the ages of your two boys but mine are 5 and 2. 2 year old is too little for the attention span of chapter books but my five year old and I have read Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little recently. Also did James and the Giant Peach which had its odd moments but good overall.
