I am a writer!

While I was at Allume, I learned to call myself a writer. It's funny, but I always thought a writer was someone like Steven King or Nicholas Sparks. You know, someone who writes novels, for real money.

I have always written. When I was young, I wrote in journals. I copied poetry from Teen Magazine into little flowered books with ribbons attached to mark my page. I honestly thought every girl did the same. The aisles at Target and the shelves at Barnes and Noble that house those many little journals were evidence that they were always in demand.

Earlier this year, I began writing emails to some members of my Bible study. I poured out my heart through the words in those emails. I wondered why I was {almost} the only one who shared my story in written words.  I thought it strange. I wanted to read heart felt words from others too.

I have learned that not everyone writes. Some people never write anything more than to-do lists. They never put words to paper. They might think about their feelings or talk about their stories, but they can't remember ever writing them anywhere. Gasp....did you know that?

I said, "I am a writer!"
But...I have so much more to learn about being a good writer. I want to tell a story that is interesting, but I want it to sound like me. I want to share from my experiences and I want to make you think. I may even want to make you act. I want to write because by doing so, I find out more about myself and somehow, that makes sense.

I attended several sessions at Allume that were focused on writing.
One was called "The Core 5 of writing things that Matter!", by Lisa Whittle. She pointed out that good writers move people with their words. We don't want o write good words. We want to write words that matter.
Key points...

-Find the core.  Don't just write on the surface. Plunge deeper until you find the spot were words translate into the message that you are hoping to share, where you can connect with your reader.
-Don't settle. Push through anonymity. Write even if no one is reading. Push through the criticism. Write and you will get better.
-Understand the story. We tell stories to connect, to ready hearts, and then to nudge people toward receptive insight.
-Be see through.  Let go of your perfect. Others feel brave when you are honest and share your needs. Sometimes you have to ...just write.
-Write from the truest you.  Learn from other writers, but do not try to become them. Know yourself and accept yourself and stay close to those who believe in you.

Sara Markley spoke about "Finding your True Voice".
This goes back to finding out who you are. The people that we most like to read...are authentic, confident and comfortable in their skin. It is true, isn't it? To find your voice, it may take a little self discovery. Don't be scared of what you may find. It also takes practice. And once you find your voice...guard it. Keep it authentic.

Andrea from the Organic Bird spoke about "How to tell hard stories!" She spoke about writing her own hard story and about the redemption and healing that came from that experience. She made it clear that sometimes your story may be what someone else needs to read. When we let go of pride and control, and allow God to work through our deeper stories, people are set free and given permission to tell their hard stories too.

These speakers were genuine and full of grace. They know that this writing thing is a learning process for most of us.  As you can probably tell, I did not attend any classes on how to properly use punctuation. I did not diagram sentences and I did not even see a red correcting pen. I was enlightened and encouraged to keep writing my story...dots, dashes and all.

No more eXcuses!
Keeping at it!

Today, I'm linking up with alphabe-Thursday. I'm hoping that Mrs Jenny will make an eXception and allow me to turn in my assignment from last week. There is an X in excuses.... but, "W" is for Writer! Join me and the rest of the class here!

WIWW ~ More of "After Allume!"

Yesterday, I got dressed for the first time since returning home from Allume. Zac had a fever all day Sunday, so I knew that neither one of us would be leaving the house on Monday. PJ pants and a sweat shirt suited me just fine until around 7 pm when I exchanged my PJs for yoga pants on my way out the door to the Children's Urgent Care. No make up, a ball cap, and a pair of socks that didn't match. I looked like the sick one...so hopefully, no one really held it against me.
{If it matters...   Scarf~ Old Navy (new)   Shirt~ Old Navy (old)    Jeans~ Target (really old)}

So back to yesterday.
I showered. I got dressed and put on make up. I met my sweet friend for lunch and got to tell her about my time at Allume. I gave her a present, a piece of the conference that I knew was meant for her.  You see...When I arrived at the registration desk, I was given a choice of books. One was a prayer devotional by Beth Moore called Whispers of Hope.  My sweet friend has a huge heart for prayer and I knew that book would belong to her.

 {Actually, this was not the prayer room This was the lounge, but it had a
similar feel and at this time of the day...a lot less people!}

I also couldn't wait to tell her about the prayer room at Allume. A place much like the lounge... cozy, inviting, warm, and set up to encourage small groups of women to connect on a deeper level. Along the wall in alphabetical order, there were hundreds of journals. One prayer journal for each person at Allume. Throughout the weekend, encouraging notes and prayers were written in the journals by others who had met and been encouraged by them. It was addicting. I wish I had gotten to the prayer before Saturday afternoon.

My friend was encouraged and so excited for me. She had tears in her eyes when she heard me say, "And while I was at Allume, I learned to call myself a writer!"  She had always known that to be true about me...but I didn't. Her acknowledge of that, the smile, the look on her face, and the tears...oh...such sweet goodness to my soul. And she would not have cared for a moment if I had shown up for lunch in my sweats and ball cap.

But because we all know it feels good to get dressed after 2 days in PJs, I ironed a shirt, pulled on some jeans...and wrapped a scarf around my neck...one of the two ways I know how. I'm learning  to change it up a bit and this video from FashionABLE is helping.

FashionABLE is an incredible organization empowering women in Africa...
and my next scarf will come from one of them. Go check them out here!

It's "What I Wore" Wednesday!
If you found me by way of  Lindsay's blog, I must say, I haven't shown my face over there in quite a while!
I'd love it if you'd take a moment to say "Hi"...and I'll come see your face and say "Hi" right back.

Feasting on truth at Allume!

Because I am a small time blogger.... I totally feasted on the words of Ann Voskamp and Melanie Shankle. I mean feasted as in pulling up a chair to the buffet table and just digging in with a fork.

They brought a similar message. A message from Jesus of significance and authenticity.

Ann spoke eloquently about each one of us being a star, as every one of Gods children are stars. That collectively, the stars shine and gain attention and show the wonder of the Creator. A single star becomes so much more brilliant and effective when it is collaborating with a sky full of stars.
In the same manner, when we stop comparing ourselves to bigger bloggers, more influential teachers, more organized mothers, and more radical women....and start believing in ourselves, then we see the great joy that comes from gratitude...then we feel significant even when we are just one of the hundreds of stars illuminating the night sky. We know we have value and significance...that our small story is part of Gods grand story.

Melanie reminded us that we are all called to something, but we are not all called to the same thing. She spoke of the psalmist, David and of how God called him, while he was doing what he was doing....daily. God sees us when the world doesn't and he teaches many lessons in obscurity. She reminded us to "not despise the day of small beginnings." We cannot compare ourselves to others. It is never about what we do or don't do, it is all about Jesus. He may need you in Uganda, or he may call you to minister at the fancy clubhouse in your upper class neighborhood!  Run to the battle line because you realize the battle belongs to The Lord...and you will be blessed.

We are significant and we have a purpose....all of us, as members of the body of Christ.
That makes this small time blogger, doing what I'm doing, tired of keeping up with the Joneses, girl really happy and hopeful and ready to shine with the rest of you!

Oh yeah!
Happy Tuesday to ya!

This is the second post in my "After Allume" series...because there is just too much to say about Allume in one post.

After Allume!

Allume was amazing! I have so much to share!
{Me and my roommates...once strangers...now sweet friends!}

When I returned home, I was eager to show off my swag. As I pulled out more and more free stuff to show, my littles looked less and less like they believed me. "How much money did you really spend? " My family was attentive and interested....and fascinated! More to come about the swaggy goodness!

My husband asked me, "Who was your favorite speaker?"  I wasn't sure. I had to think. I said, "It was all one big conversation...one message...one challenge. My favorite speaker was... Jesus!" It just came out of my mouth, but it was so true. God had prepared one message for all of us at Allume. He spoke the message through keynote speakers, break out session speakers, impact opportunity speakers....and in the sweet conversations and story sharing that was going on all over the landscape of the Hyatt Regency Hotel. We shared over meals, during photography classes, while standing in line for breakfast, while exiting the elevator and walking to our rooms. We listened while we ate cupcakes, packed boxes of bras to be sent to Africa, while we raised  our hands in worship or sat quietly in the prayer room. The conversation was continuous....the one between us and God.

He was making it clear. We all matter. Big time bloggers, small time bloggers, never hardly ever bloggers,  we matter.  This conversation was about our hearts....made by him, for him. A heart that is only truly satisfied when it is fully surrendered. And...We all have a story that he is crafting as art. That as we share our stories, we are inviting others to realize that they have a story too. And...We are all important as members of the body of Christ. We have gifts and a purpose.  We can accomplish so much more when we lay aside the need for comparison and just abide and move as he directs...to accomplish a common goal.

I am taking some time today to pour over my notes from this weekend. Like I said, I have so much to share. Before I left for Allume, I wrote a " 7 days of before Allume" series. I realize now it was incorrectly named...the 7 should have been a 6. So...for this next series, I'll leave off the number altogether and just call it "After Allume!"

If you were a part of the conversation at Allume, Thank you.
I'm looking forward to so much more.
